Why AMR is a global crisis? – critically evaluation of the health and economic aspect of anti microbial resistance
According to the updated WHO Global Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (GAP-AMR 2026–2036), adopted at the 79th World Health Assembly in May 2026, AMR is no longer just a healthcare problem—it is a global development, economic, food security, and national security crisis.
1. AMR is already causing millions of deaths every year
- Drug-resistant bacterial infections were directly responsible for 1.27 million deaths globally in 2019.
- AMR contributed to 4.95 million deaths worldwide in the same year.
- This makes AMR comparable to, or greater than, many major infectious diseases in terms of mortality burden.
2. The burden is projected to grow dramatically by 2050
- Recent global modelling suggests AMR could cause 1.91 million direct deaths annually by 2050.

- Several international assessments warn that cumulative deaths from AMR could exceed 39 million between 2025 and 2050.
3. AMR threatens modern medicine itself
- Routine medical procedures such as cancer chemotherapy, organ transplantation, neonatal care, intensive care treatment, and major surgeries depend on effective antibiotics.
- When antimicrobials stop working, common infections become difficult or impossible to treat, increasing mortality, complications, and healthcare costs.
- WHO identifies AMR as one of the most serious threats to health systems globally.
4. AMR creates a massive economic burden
- The United Nations Environment Programme estimates that unchecked AMR could reduce global GDP by US$3.4 trillion annually.
- It could push 24 million additional people into extreme poverty over the next decade.
- Other global estimates project cumulative economic losses approaching US$100 trillion by 2050.
5. AMR is a One Health crisis affecting humans, animals, food systems and the environment
- WHO’s updated 2026–2036 Action Plan emphasizes that AMR spreads across human health, livestock, agriculture, food production, water systems and the environment.
- Data from WHO’s GLASS surveillance network indicate that approximately 1 in 6 bacterial infections reported globally in 2023 showed resistance to antibiotic treatment.
- This threatens food security, animal health, trade, and environmental sustainability in addition to human health.
